It listens for the click
Ball off rubber is a crisp click that's gone in milliseconds, repeating faster than in any other racket sport. The detector picks that pattern out of six frequency bands — and its per-recording loudness calibration keeps table bounces and footwork below the bar.
Points become clips
Clicks trading back and forth at table tennis pace get grouped into points, padded with a couple of seconds either side, and handed to you as clips you can play, save, or share.
How to film table tennis highlights that cut themselves.
Film from the end of the table, a metre or two back and slightly raised — the classic broadcast angle. Both players stay in frame and the mic sits close enough to hear every contact, which is what the detector actually needs.
Keep the original audio. Detection works entirely from sound; a muted track or a music overlay leaves nothing to analyse. The good news: table tennis is the easiest sport in the family to hear — the mic is never more than a few metres from the ball.
Basements, garages and clubs all work. The algorithm normalises to each recording's own noise floor, so a humming dehumidifier or a hall of other tables won't drown your match out.
Table tennis points are seconds long, and the gaps between them — retrieving the ball from under the radiator, arguing about edge balls, serving rituals — are not. Even a focused practice match is mostly dead air on camera.

Is my table tennis video uploaded to a server?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser using Web Audio — the video never leaves your device, nothing is stored, and there's no account or sign-up. Watch the network tab while it works: nothing goes out.
How does it detect the points?
From sound alone. Ball-off-rubber clicks are sharp, fast-decaying transients that stand out against the recording's own noise floor. The detector measures that contrast in six frequency bands, keeps only clicks that are loud for your recording, checks the rhythm, and groups them into points.
Can it tell strikes from table bounces?
Mostly, yes. The strike is louder and sharper than the bounce, and the detector calibrates a loudness bar from your own recording, so bounces and footwork generally fall below it. A very boomy table in a silent room can occasionally sneak a bounce into a clip.
Which video formats work?
Anything your browser can decode: MP4 and MOV straight off a phone are ideal, WebM works, and an audio-only file works too if you just want the timestamps.
How long can the video be?
Up to roughly 30–45 minutes is comfortable (hard limit: one hour or 2 GB) in the browser. For long sessions, the Slice app runs the same detector natively on your phone, with no length limit.
