It listens for shuttle strikes
A shuttle off the strings is a sharp crack that rises and dies within a fraction of a second — clears, drops and smashes alike. The detector picks that fingerprint out of six frequency bands while ignoring shoe squeaks, shouts and the court next door.
Rallies become clips
Strikes that trade back and forth in badminton rhythm get grouped into rallies, padded with a couple of seconds either side, and handed to you as clips you can play, save, or share.
How to film badminton highlights that cut themselves.
Behind the back line, slightly raised is the classic angle: the camera sees the whole court, and the mic hears both players' strikes clearly. Balcony railings and tripods behind the court both work well.
Keep the original audio. Detection works entirely from sound — a muted track or a music overlay leaves nothing to detect. Add music after you've cut the highlights, not before.
Echoey halls are expected. Badminton lives indoors, and reverb smears the crack of a strike. The detector carries a second evidence path for exactly this: a hit that towers over the hall's own noise floor still counts even when the echo blunts its edge.
Badminton rallies are fast and dense, but a match recording still spends most of its length on shuttle collection, towel breaks and the walk back to serve. An hour of footage typically holds under twenty minutes of shuttle-in-air time.
That's why match videos go unwatched — and why the one clip worth sharing, the 40-shot rally or the jump smash that painted the line, usually stays buried. The detector surfaces every rally in seconds, on your device, with the reaction after the winner kept in the clip.

Is my badminton video uploaded to a server?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser using Web Audio — the video never leaves your device, nothing is stored, and there's no account or sign-up. Watch the network tab while it works: nothing goes out.
How does it detect the rallies?
From sound alone. Shuttle strikes are sharp, fast-decaying transients that stand out against the recording's own noise floor. The detector measures that contrast in six frequency bands, keeps only strikes that are loud for your recording, checks the back-and-forth rhythm, and groups them into rallies.
Does it work in an echoey sports hall?
Yes — that's the badminton case it was hardened for. Reverb blunts a strike's sharp edges, so alongside the sharpness test there's a loudness path: a hit that clearly towers over the hall's own floor still registers, echo and all.
Which video formats work?
Anything your browser can decode: MP4 and MOV straight off a phone are ideal, WebM works, and an audio-only file works too if you just want the timestamps.
How long can the video be?
Up to roughly 30–45 minutes is comfortable (hard limit: one hour or 2 GB) in the browser. For full matches and long sessions, the Slice app runs the same detector natively on your phone, with no length limit.
